Fjord

A drama by Cristian Mungiu, from his own screenplay. The Gheorghiu family — a Romanian father, a Norwegian mother and their children — moves to the mother's home village on a Norwegian fjord. They settle in, meet the Halbergs next door, and at first enter village life easily. What follows is the divergence that carries the whole story. The family lives by its own rules and raises the children strictly and religiously, and this is noticed; the neighbours come to suspect that the children are being treated wrongly. Suspicion becomes a report to the authorities, the children are taken away, and the parents find themselves having to prove not a particular act but themselves. The village that has just taken them in turns around: sympathy gives way to watching, and private life becomes public business. The film looks at a society that declares tolerance its central value and is still able to push out those who live differently. The director neither excuses nor accuses either side: the neighbours have grounds to worry about the children, and the parents have grounds to feel they are being judged for a way of life rather than for harm. The story is drawn from a real case in which Norwegian authorities removed a family's children. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve take the leading parts, with Ellen Dorrit Petersen and Lisa Loven Kongsli as the neighbours. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
