The practice of delivering a sermon involves an oral or written discourse aimed at disseminating religious, moral, or philosophical ideas to instruct, inspire, or persuade an audience. The origins of preaching trace back to the 11th–5th centuries BCE, with the emergence of spiritual movements across various cultures, including Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, the prophetic tradition in Israel, Orphism and philosophical schools in Greece, and the teachings of Confucius and Laozi in China. These movements developed diverse forms of preaching, such as prophetic speeches, philosophical treatises, and didactic dialogues. In the Christian tradition, the sermon became a central component of worship, incorporating elements from late antique rhetoric and Jewish homiletics. By the 4th century CE, the genre of church sermon had crystallized, with notable preachers like Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, and John Chrysostom. In the Western tradition, preaching evolved under the influence of Cicero, with theoretical foundations laid by Ambrose of Milan and Augustine of Hippo. During the Middle Ages, sermons became a significant literary genre, and the Reformation era saw Martin Luther emphasizing their central role in church life. Contemporary sermons encompass various forms, including liturgical addresses, public speeches, written articles, and digital formats like blogs and podcasts. They continue to serve as a means of conveying spiritual and ethical values, adapting to cultural and technological shifts in society.
