The 2004 British television detective film, directed by Simon Cellan Jones and written by Allan Cubitt, presents an original story not based on Arthur Conan Doyle's works. Set in London in 1903, the narrative follows a series of mysterious murders of young women from aristocratic families, each found with a silk stocking stuffed down her throat, indicating a perverse signature of the killer. Dr. Watson (Ian Hart), disturbed by the events, seeks assistance from his friend Sherlock Holmes (Rupert Everett), who is in semi-retirement and battling drug addiction. Holmes returns to the investigation and discovers that the killer suffers from fetishism, particularly focused on women's feet and footwear. Throughout the investigation, Holmes and Watson encounter various suspects, including a servant with an ironclad alibi, but fingerprint evidence does not match. Holmes sets a trap using the sister of one of the victims, who performs in a classical tableau before the royal family, hoping to attract the killer's attention. The plan succeeds, and a suspect is apprehended, yet fingerprints again do not match. Holmes deduces that the killer has an identical twin, and the real threat remains at large. The film is characterized by a dark atmosphere, meticulously recreated Edwardian England, and a deep psychological portrayal of Holmes, struggling with inner demons. Rupert Everett brings new depth to his character, portraying him as a brilliant yet tormented individual, while Ian Hart as Watson demonstrates loyalty and determination. The film explores themes of duality, obsession, and the struggle between intellect and emotion.
