The Rip

A crime thriller by Joe Carnahan, from his own screenplay. A Miami-Dade police captain is murdered, and suspicion falls on her own unit, the tactical narcotics team. Word has gone around the department for a long time that someone on the inside has been stripping stash houses of money that officially does not exist. Her deputy, Lieutenant Dane Dumars, gets a tip about a house in Hialeah and drives there with four of his detectives. The granddaughter of the late owner lets them in unwillingly, and in the attic the team finds twenty million dollars in cash belonging to a cartel. From that moment the story rests not on a chase but on the arithmetic of trust: the sum is too large to book by the manual, and too large to split in silence. Dumars steps away from procedure, and every man in the team begins to count what his share will be and who will be first to decide that the others are surplus. The film is written as a study of what a shared secret does to people: it binds tighter than friendship while it holds, and comes apart faster than anything else, because there is nothing for it to hold on to. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck take the leading parts and also produced. Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Nestor Carbonell, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Kyle Chandler and Scott Adkins appear beside them. The film went straight to streaming on 16 January 2026, with no theatrical run.
