A 2006 British comedy-drama directed by Tom Vaughan, based on the novel by David Nicholls. Set in 1985, the film follows Brian Jackson (James McAvoy), a working-class student beginning his first year at the University of Bristol. A lifelong fan of the quiz show University Challenge, Brian aspires to join the university's team. Initially unsuccessful, he eventually secures a spot due to unforeseen circumstances. Brian becomes infatuated with his glamorous teammate Alice Harbinson (Alice Eve), while also forming a connection with the politically active Rebecca Epstein (Rebecca Hall). His ambition and desire for acceptance lead to a series of missteps: he alienates both women, compromises the team's integrity by prematurely answering a question he had inadvertently seen, resulting in the team's disqualification. After a period of introspection, Brian reconciles with his friends and recommits to his studies. In the end, he seeks out Rebecca at a political demonstration, apologizes, and asks for a fresh start, which she accepts with a kiss. The film was praised for its performances and authentic portrayal of 1980s university life.
