Stay Hungry

A 1976 American comedy-drama directed by Bob Rafelson, based on the novel by Charles Gaines. Set in Birmingham, Alabama, the film follows Craig Blake (Jeff Bridges), a young man from a wealthy family who leads an idle life after the death of his parents. Employed at a dubious investment firm, Craig is tasked with acquiring a small gym to complete a real estate development deal. During this process, he meets bodybuilder Joe Santo (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who is training for a competition, and Joe's friend Mary Tate (Sally Field). Craig becomes increasingly drawn to the gym's environment and its community, including trainer Thor Erikson (R.G. Armstrong) and other staff members. His relationship with Mary Tate turns romantic, and his friendship with Joe deepens. As Craig decides to back out of the deal, his former associates resort to violence to achieve their goals. The film explores themes of self-discovery, class differences, and the search for meaning in life. Arnold Schwarzenegger received a Golden Globe for Best Acting Debut in a Motion Picture for his portrayal of Joe Santo.
