The 2007 American feature-length animated film, directed by Ash Brannon and Chris Buck, is a unique blend of comedy and mockumentary, styled as a documentary film. The plot follows a crested penguin named Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf), who lives in the small Antarctic town of Shiverpool (translated as Kolotun in the Russian dub). From a young age, Cody dreams of becoming a professional surfer, inspired by the legendary penguin surfer Big Z. Despite skepticism from his family and peers, Cody decides to travel to Pen-Gu Island in the southern Pacific Ocean to participate in a prestigious surfing competition held in memory of Big Z. Along the way, he befriends an eccentric chicken enthusiast named Chicken Joe (Jon Heder), who becomes his loyal companion and partner. On the island, Cody faces numerous challenges: he encounters the arrogant and self-assured champion Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader), who seizes every opportunity to belittle the newcomer. However, fate leads Cody to a mysterious hermit named Geek (Jeff Bridges), who turns out to be Big Z himself, having faked his death and withdrawn from public life. Under Geek's mentorship, Cody undergoes intensive training, learning not only surfing techniques but also a life philosophy based on harmony with nature and oneself. During his preparation, Cody also grows closer to the charming lifeguard Lani Aliikai (Zooey Deschanel), who supports him through difficult times. The story culminates in the final competition, where Cody must not only showcase his skills but also prove to himself and others that true success is measured not by victories but by personal growth and dedication to one's passion. "Surf's Up" received acclaim from critics and audiences for its original storytelling style, humor, and profound life lessons, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2008.
