This is a physical and cultural practice involving human movement through water using limb motions without the aid of supportive devices. Swimming has been known since prehistoric times; archaeological findings, such as the cave paintings in Egypt's "Cave of Swimmers," date back to the 9th millennium BCE. In ancient civilizations like Egypt, Assyria, Phoenicia, Greece, and Rome, swimming was utilized for practical purposes: fishing, military activities, and as a component of physical education. In Ancient Greece, it was considered an essential part of education, while in Rome, special swimming pools were constructed. In 1538, German professor Nikolaus Wynmann authored the first book on swimming, "The Swimmer, or a Dialogue on the Art of Swimming," analyzing the breaststroke technique. Swimming competitions began in Europe around 1800, and in 1873, Englishman John Arthur Trudgen introduced the Trudgen stroke, a precursor to the modern crawl. Swimming was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and in 1908, the International Swimming Federation (FINA) was established. Over time, various swimming styles were developed and standardized, including breaststroke, freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke. Swimming promotes endurance, strength, coordination, and flexibility, and is also used for therapeutic and rehabilitative purposes. Today, swimming is a popular sport and recreational activity, bringing together people of all ages worldwide.
