The show centers on Jim Hardie (Dale Robertson), a special agent for the Wells Fargo company operating in the American West during the 1870s and 1880s. Hardie investigates crimes, escorts stagecoaches, protects shipments, and confronts outlaws, facing various dangers. Initially presented in black-and-white with 30-minute episodes, the series transitioned to color and expanded to 60-minute episodes in its final season. A total of 201 episodes were produced. The series featured guest appearances by actors such as Joyce Meadows, Patricia Owens, and Phillip Pine. "Tales of Wells Fargo" became one of the most popular television shows of its time, ranking third in the Nielsen ratings during the 1957–1958 season with a rating of 35.2.
