The Lone Ranger is an American Western television series that aired from 1949 to 1957 on ABC, created by George B. Seitz Jr. and based on the radio show of the same name. The story follows John Reid (Clayton Moore), a Texas Ranger who becomes the sole survivor of an ambush by the outlaw Butch Cavendish. Rescued and nursed back to health by the Native American Tonto (Jay Silverheels), John dons a mask and takes on the identity of the Lone Ranger to fight crime in the Old West. Tonto becomes his loyal companion, and together they confront various criminals and protect the innocent. The series became ABC's first true hit, with the phrase "Hi-yo Silver, away!" and the masked hero becoming iconic in American pop culture. Over eight seasons, 221 episodes were produced, with Clayton Moore starring in most of them and John Hart taking over the role in certain seasons. The series was filmed in black and white and is considered a classic of television Westerns.
