Stephen Belber adapted his own play of the same name into this 2001 American drama, which Richard Linklater directed. Everything unfolds in real time inside one motel room in Lansing, Michigan, which makes the picture a chamber piece. The narrative centers on three former high school classmates: Vince (Ethan Hawke), a small-time drug dealer and volunteer firefighter; Jon Salter (Robert Sean Leonard), an aspiring documentary filmmaker visiting for a film festival; and Amy Randall (Uma Thurman), now an assistant district attorney. Vince arranges a meeting with Jon to revisit their shared past, particularly an incident from a decade earlier where, according to Vince, Amy accused Jon of rape. Through intense conversation, Vince coerces a confession from Jon, secretly recording it, and then invites Amy to join them to clarify the matter. Amy, however, asserts that her encounter with Jon was consensual and, to teach a lesson, pretends to call the police, warning the men to leave.
