An American sitcom by Sheldon Leonard, which CBS carried for eight years, from October 3, 1960 until April 1, 1968. The series follows Sheriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) in the fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina. Andy is a widower raising his young son, Opie (Ron Howard), with the help of his aunt, Bee Taylor (Frances Bavier). His deputy is the bumbling yet well-meaning cousin, Barney Fife (Don Knotts), whose attempts at law enforcement often lead to humorous situations. The show focuses on the everyday lives and relationships of Mayberry's residents, including barber Floyd Lawson (Howard McNear), gas station attendants Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors) and Goober Pyle (George Lindsey), among other colorful characters. The series was known for its warm atmosphere, humor, and moral lessons reflecting small-town American values. Eight seasons brought 249 episodes in all: the first 159 in black and white, the remaining 90 in color. The show consistently ranked in the top ten Nielsen ratings and concluded its final season at number one, a rare achievement. It spawned spin-offs, including "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." and "Mayberry R.F.D.," as well as the reunion telemovie "Return to Mayberry" (1986). The series has had a lasting impact on American pop culture and remains beloved for its charm and universal themes.
