The Aviator

A 2004 American epic biographical drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by John Logan, based on Charles Higham's book "Howard Hughes: The Secret Life". The film chronicles the life of Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio), an eccentric millionaire, aviation pioneer, and Hollywood film producer, covering the period from the late 1920s to the late 1940s. In the beginning, Hughes is working on the film "Hell's Angels," investing significant time and resources to achieve realistic depictions of World War I aerial combat. His perfectionism and ambition lead to production delays and budget overruns, but the film ultimately becomes successful. Concurrently, Hughes becomes deeply involved in aviation, acquiring Hughes Aircraft Company and developing innovative aircraft, including the H-1 Racer, in which he sets a speed record, and the massive H-4 Hercules transport plane, known as the "Spruce Goose". The film also explores his romantic relationships with prominent actresses: Katharine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett), with whom he has a passionate affair, and Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale), who becomes a close friend and support during challenging times. Hughes faces competition from Juan Trippe (Alec Baldwin), head of Pan American World Airways, and political pressure from Senator Ralph Owen Brewster (Alan Alda), who attempts to accuse Hughes of corruption and misappropriation of government funds. Amidst his professional and personal achievements, Hughes's obsessive-compulsive disorder intensifies, manifesting in germophobia and repetitive behaviors, leading to his isolation and declining mental health. The film received critical acclaim and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning five, including Best Supporting Actress (Cate Blanchett), Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, and Best Cinematography. "The Aviator" also won the BAFTA Award for Best Film and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama. Cate Blanchett became the first actor to win an Oscar for portraying another Oscar-winning actor, Katharine Hepburn. The film grossed over $213 million worldwide against a budget of $110 million.​
