The Big Short

A 2015 American biographical comedy-drama film produced by Regency Enterprises and Plan B Entertainment, and released by Paramount Pictures. Directed and co-written by Adam McKay, the film is based on Michael Lewis's book "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine" and depicts the financial crisis of 2007–2008. The plot follows several financial experts who predicted the impending collapse of the housing market. Michael Burry (Christian Bale), manager of the hedge fund Scion Capital, identifies the instability of mortgage-backed securities and decides to invest against the market, despite skepticism from his peers. Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), an ambitious trader, learns of Burry's strategy and presents it to Mark Baum (Steve Carell), head of the FrontPoint Partners group, known for his critical view of the banking system. Simultaneously, young investors Charlie Geller (John Magaro) and Jamie Shipley (Finn Wittrock) accidentally discover the upcoming crisis and, with the support of retired banker Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt), decide to capitalize on the situation. The film blends elements of comedy and drama, offering an in-depth look at the causes of the financial crisis, employing unconventional techniques, including direct addresses to the audience and explanations of complex financial terms through guest celebrities.
