The 2012 American action-thriller directed by Tony Gilroy serves as the fourth installment in the Jason Bourne franchise but introduces a new protagonist. The story centers on Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), an operative of the U.S. Department of Defense's secret program called "Operation Outcome," whose participants undergo genetic enhancements to boost physical and mental abilities. The film's events run concurrently with "The Bourne Ultimatum" (2007): following former CIA agent Jason Bourne's exposure of the "Treadstone" and "Blackbriar" programs, the authorities decide to eliminate all agents associated with these projects to conceal their existence. While on assignment in Alaska, Cross becomes a target for termination but survives a drone attack. Realizing that his own employers are hunting him, Cross seeks out Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz), a scientist involved in developing the program's medications. Together, they travel to the Philippines to find a laboratory capable of performing a "viral off" procedure, allowing Cross to retain his enhanced abilities without continued medication. Along the way, they evade CIA agents and confront new-generation operatives from the "LARX" program, including the highly dangerous assassin LARX-03 (Louis Ozawa Changchien). The film concludes with Cross and Shearing successfully escaping and setting off into the unknown, hoping to start anew. "The Bourne Legacy" received mixed reviews from critics: while some praised the intense action sequences and Renner's performance, others criticized the convoluted plot and the absence of Matt Damon as Bourne. Nonetheless, the film achieved commercial success, grossing over $276 million worldwide against a $125 million budget.
