The 2004 historical drama, directed by Mary McGuckian, is based on Thornton Wilder's 1927 novel of the same name. Set in Peru in 1714, the story revolves around the collapse of an ancient Incan bridge that claims the lives of five individuals: the Marquesa de Montemayor (Kathy Bates), her servant Pepita (Adriana Domínguez), the scribe Esteban, Uncle Pio (Harvey Keitel), and a young boy. Witnessing the tragedy is Brother Juniper (Gabriel Byrne), a Franciscan friar who embarks on a quest to understand why these particular people died. He conducts a thorough investigation over several years, interviewing those who knew the victims, in an attempt to determine whether their deaths were part of a divine plan or mere coincidence. The film delves into themes of fate, faith, and the meaning of life, posing philosophical questions about predestination and randomness. The cast also includes Robert De Niro as the Archbishop of Lima, F. Murray Abraham as the Viceroy of Peru, and Geraldine Chaplin as the Abbess. Despite its ensemble cast and acclaimed costume design, the film received mixed reviews from critics and was not a commercial success.
