The 2011 American science fiction comedy horror film, directed by Drew Goddard in his directorial debut and written by Goddard and Joss Whedon, follows a group of college students: Dana (Kristen Connolly), Curt (Chris Hemsworth), Jules (Anna Hutchison), Marty (Fran Kranz), and Holden (Jesse Williams), who venture to a remote cabin in the woods for a vacation. Unbeknownst to them, technicians Gary Sitterson (Richard Jenkins) and Steve Hadley (Bradley Whitford) from an underground facility are manipulating their environment as part of a sinister ritual. In the cabin, the friends discover a mysterious diary, and reading it awakens a family of zombie killers. As events unfold, it becomes evident that their ordeal is orchestrated as part of a global ritual to appease ancient deities, with similar scenarios unfolding worldwide. The film cleverly deconstructs traditional horror tropes, blending elements of comedy and satire, while exploring themes of free will and the human penchant for violence.
