This 1999 American drama film, directed by Lasse Hallström and written by John Irving based on his 1985 novel, is set in World War II-era Maine and follows the life of Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire), an orphan raised in the St. Cloud's orphanage under the care of Dr. Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine), an obstetrician and abortionist who imparts his medical knowledge to Homer. Despite his bond with Dr. Larch, Homer yearns to experience life beyond the orphanage. When Wally Worthington (Paul Rudd) and his pregnant girlfriend Candy Kendall (Charlize Theron) arrive at the orphanage seeking an abortion, Homer decides to accompany them to Wally's family farm, where he joins an apple-picking crew led by Mr. Rose (Delroy Lindo) and his daughter Rose Rose (Erykah Badu). Life on the farm introduces Homer to new challenges: he engages in manual labor, witnesses complex dynamics among the workers, and uncovers the incestuous relationship between Mr. Rose and his daughter. After Wally departs for war, Homer and Candy develop a romantic relationship. Confronted with the need to perform an abortion for Rose Rose, Homer reevaluates his stance on the procedure and assumes responsibilities once held by Dr. Larch. The film delves into themes of morality, personal choice, love, and coming of age, emphasizing that rules created without understanding real-life contexts can be unjust. The film received critical acclaim and won two Academy Awards: Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Michael Caine).
