The 1989 British made-for-television drama film, directed by Alan Clarke and written by Al Hunter Ashton for the BBC, centers on Clive Bissell, nicknamed "Bex" (Gary Oldman), a respectable estate agent who leads a football hooligan firm called the Inter City Crew (ICC), inspired by the real-life Inter City Firm associated with West Ham United. Bex aims to unite various rival firms into a single "National Firm" to assert dominance during the upcoming 1988 European Championship in West Germany. His ambitions face resistance from other leaders, notably Yeti (Phil Davis), head of the rival "Buccaneers" firm. Bex's personal life is strained as his wife (Lesley Manville) expresses concern over his violent lifestyle, especially after their young son injures himself with a knife left unattended. Undeterred, Bex continues his activities, driven by the thrill and sense of purpose they provide. The film culminates in a tragic conclusion when Bex is killed by Yeti during a brutal confrontation, yet his followers continue to revere him as a hero, vowing to fight in his memory. Notable for its minimal musical score, save for Dean Martin's "That's Amore" during the opening credits, the film has been acclaimed for its realistic portrayal of football hooliganism and is considered one of Gary Oldman's finest performances.
