The 2013 American action-adventure Western directed by Gore Verbinski, with a screenplay by Justin Haythe, Ted Elliott, and Terry Rossio, is based on the radio series of the same name. The film follows John Reid (Armie Hammer), an idealistic lawyer who becomes the sole survivor of a Texas Ranger ambush orchestrated by outlaw Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner). Rescued and nursed back to health by the eccentric Native American Tonto (Johnny Depp), who believes John is chosen to fight injustice, they team up to confront corrupt railroad tycoon Latham Cole (Tom Wilkinson), who seeks to seize Native American lands. Other characters include Rebecca Reid (Ruth Wilson), John's love interest, and Red Harrington (Helena Bonham Carter), a saloon owner with a prosthetic leg that doubles as a shotgun. The film blends humor, action, and critiques of capitalist expansion, employing a framing narrative where an elderly Tonto recounts the tale to a young boy in 1933. Despite its high production budget and star-studded cast, the film received mixed reviews and underperformed commercially.
