The Pirates of Somalia

The 2017 American drama film directed by Bryan Buckley is based on the 2011 book. It follows Jay Bahadur (Evan Peters), a University of Toronto graduate aspiring to become a journalist. After meeting his idol, veteran journalist Seymour Tolbin (Al Pacino), Jay decides to travel to Somalia to write a report on local pirates. Upon arriving in the war-torn country, he gains the support of translator Abdi (Barkhad Abdi), who assists him in establishing contacts with Somali pirates. Jay delves deeper into studying their organization, risking his own safety. The film also features Melanie Griffith as Maria Bahadur, Jay's mother, and Kiana Madani as Tracy Ziconni, his girlfriend. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 27, 2017, and was released widely on December 8, 2017.
