A 2009 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Rebecca Miller, based on her novel of the same name. The story centers on Pippa Lee (Robin Wright), a woman who, after moving with her husband Herb (Alan Arkin) to a retirement community in Connecticut, begins to reevaluate her past and present life. Through a series of flashbacks, her tumultuous youth is revealed: strained relations with her mother Suky (Maria Bello), who is addicted to amphetamines; running away to live with her aunt Trish (Robin Weigert) and her partner Kat (Julianne Moore); involvement in erotic photo sessions and immersion in a bohemian lifestyle, including work as an exotic dancer. During this period, she meets publisher Herbert "Herb" Lee, significantly older and married. Their affair leads to the suicide of his wife Gigi (Monica Bellucci), after which Pippa and Herb marry, have two children, and seemingly lead a prosperous life. However, upon moving to the retirement home, Pippa faces an identity crisis, especially after discovering Herb's affair with her friend Sandra (Winona Ryder). During this time, she grows close to Chris Nadeau (Keanu Reeves), the 35-year-old son of a neighbor, who has returned home after a divorce and works at a local store. Their friendship evolves into something more, prompting Pippa to reassess her life and make decisions leading to liberation from previous constraints. The film explores themes of self-discovery, female identity, family relationships, and the quest for authenticity amidst societal expectations and personal compromises. The narrative blends dramatic and comedic elements, creating a deep and multifaceted portrait of the protagonist.
