A 2002 American political drama directed by Phillip Noyce, with a screenplay by Christopher Hampton and Robert Schenkkan, based on Graham Greene's 1955 novel of the same name. Set in 1952 Saigon, Vietnam, during the First Indochina War, the film follows British journalist Thomas Fowler (Michael Caine), who leads a cynical life with his young Vietnamese mistress, Phuong (Do Thi Hai Yen). The arrival of Alden Pyle (Brendan Fraser), a young American posing as an aid worker, disrupts Fowler's world. Pyle is revealed to be a CIA operative aiming to establish a "third force" in Vietnam to supplant both French colonialists and the Viet Minh. He arms General Thé's militia, leading to terrorist bombings that kill civilians. A love triangle develops between Fowler, Pyle, and Phuong, intensifying the moral complexities. Upon discovering Pyle's involvement in the violence, Fowler tacitly allows for his elimination. The film delves into themes of morality, foreign intervention, and personal accountability.
