A 1957 cult philosophical drama directed by Ingmar Bergman. Set in medieval Sweden during the Black Death, the film follows knight Antonius Block (Max von Sydow) as he returns from the Crusades, only to be confronted by Death (Bengt Ekerot), who has come to claim him. To delay his fate, he challenges Death to a game of chess, hoping to find answers about the meaning of life, faith, and destiny. Along his journey, he encounters traveling actors Jof (Nils Poppe) and Mia (Bibi Andersson), whose simple, genuine love and joy stand in stark contrast to his existential doubts. Filled with powerful symbolism, dark atmosphere, and profound reflections on human existence, the film remains one of the most significant works in world cinema.
