The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Tom Gormican directed this 2022 American action comedy and wrote its screenplay together with Kevin Etten. The film follows Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage (played by himself), whose career is in decline. To improve his financial situation, he agrees to attend the birthday party of Spanish billionaire Javi Gutierrez (Pedro Pascal) in Mallorca for $1 million. Upon arrival, Cage learns from CIA agents Vivian (Tiffany Haddish) and Martin (Ike Barinholtz) that Javi is suspected of leading a criminal cartel and kidnapping the daughter of a Catalonian presidential candidate. Cage agrees to assist the CIA by pretending to be interested in a collaborative project with Javi to gather information. However, a genuine friendship develops between him and Javi, leading Cage to question Javi's guilt. The situation becomes more complicated when Cage's ex-wife Olivia (Sharon Horgan) and their daughter Addy (Lily Sheen) arrive on the island, invited by Javi to help Cage mend his family relationships. It is soon revealed that Javi's cousin, Lucas (Paco León), the true head of the cartel, is behind the kidnapping. Cage and Javi team up to rescue Addy and Maria (Katrin Vankova), the politician's daughter. Through a tense operation, they manage to free the hostages and eliminate the threat. The film concludes with the premiere of Cage's new movie based on these events and his reconciliation with his family.
