The 2015 American supernatural horror film, directed by Robert Eggers in his feature directorial debut, is set in 1630s New England and follows a Puritan family expelled from their settlement, establishing a secluded farm near the forest. The family, led by father William (Ralph Ineson), along with his wife Katherine (Kate Dickie) and their children — eldest daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy), son Caleb (Harvey Scrimshaw), and twins Mercy (Ellie Grainger) and Jonas (Lucas Dawson) — encounters a series of inexplicable and frightening events following the mysterious disappearance of their infant. The family begins to suspect that witchcraft is the cause of their misfortunes, leading to growing distrust and paranoia among them. The film explores themes of religious fanaticism, fear of the unknown, and the destructive consequences of isolation.
