A 2008 American supernatural thriller, serving as the second feature film adaptation of the popular television series "The X-Files." Directed by Chris Carter, who co-wrote the screenplay with Frank Spotnitz, the plot unfolds several years after the events of the series: former FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) have stepped away from investigating paranormal phenomena. Scully works as a physician at a Catholic hospital, striving to save the life of a critically ill boy, while Mulder lives in seclusion, hiding from the authorities. Their peaceful lives are disrupted when the FBI seeks their assistance in investigating the disappearance of Agent Monica Bannan (Amanda Peet). During the investigation, they encounter former priest Joseph Crissman (Billy Connolly), convicted of pedophilia, who claims to have visions related to the abduction. Mulder and Scully are compelled to delve back into a world of mysteries and dangers, confronting their own doubts and fears to uncover a sinister conspiracy involving illegal medical experiments.
