The Zero Theorem

The 2013 British-French-Romanian science fiction film directed by Terry Gilliam and written by Pat Rushin follows Qohen Leth (Christoph Waltz), a reclusive programmer residing in a dilapidated church in a futuristic London. Employed by the corporation Mancom, Qohen performs monotonous tasks of "crunching entities" and is obsessed with awaiting a mysterious phone call he believes will give his life meaning. Granted permission to work from home, he is assigned to prove the "Zero Theorem" — a mathematical formula suggesting that everything in existence ultimately amounts to nothing, thereby questioning the very notion of life's purpose. Throughout his quest, Qohen interacts with various characters: his eccentric supervisor Joby (David Thewlis), the enigmatic woman Bainsley (Mélanie Thierry) who attempts to draw him out of isolation, and the teenage Bob (Lucas Hedges), son of the corporation's management. The film also features Tilda Swinton as the virtual therapist Dr. Shrink-Rom and Matt Damon as the mysterious Management. Exploring themes of existential anxiety, loneliness, and the search for meaning in a corporately and technologically dominated world, the film is visually rich with vibrant and chaotic imagery characteristic of Gilliam's style. Despite its star-studded cast and original approach, the film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed approximately $1.4 million worldwide against a budget ranging from $8.5 to $13.5 million.​
