The 1995 American science fiction thriller directed by Terry Gilliam, written by David and Janet Peoples, is based on the 1962 French short film "La Jetée." Set in 2035, after a deadly virus has decimated most of Earth's population, survivors live underground. Prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis) is offered a reduced sentence if he agrees to travel back in time to gather information about the virus's origin, believed to be linked to the mysterious "Army of the Twelve Monkeys." His first time-travel attempt lands him in 1990, where he's institutionalized as a lunatic. There, he meets psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) and fellow patient Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), the son of renowned virologist Dr. Leland Goines (Christopher Plummer). After returning to the future and then being sent to 1996, Cole and Railly investigate to prevent the virus's release. They discover that the "Army of the Twelve Monkeys" is a group of environmental activists unrelated to the virus. The true source is Dr. Peters (David Morse), a lab assistant planning to release the virus globally. The film ends tragically as Cole is killed trying to stop Peters, failing to prevent the catastrophe. The narrative delves into themes of time, memory, destiny, and the human psyche, leaving viewers pondering the possibility of altering the past to avert a predetermined future.
