The 1991 American neo-noir psychological thriller directed by Alan Rudolph begins with Bayonne, New Jersey, hairdresser Cynthia Kellogg (Demi Moore) being interrogated by Detectives John Woods (Harvey Keitel) and Linda Nealon (Billie Neal) regarding the murder of her husband, Artie (John Pankow). Cynthia provides a detailed account of the events leading up to the crime. She and her best friend, Joyce Urbanski (Glenne Headly), co-own a beauty salon. Joyce is married to James "Jimmy" Urbanski (Bruce Willis), a violent and drug-addicted man who regularly abuses her. Joyce frequently expresses a desire to kill Jimmy due to his violence and infidelity. One evening, Cynthia accompanies Joyce and Jimmy to the Feast of Saint Rocco festival. After an argument, Jimmy becomes intoxicated and falls asleep in their van. Later that night, Joyce discovers Jimmy dead with his throat slashed. In a panic, the friends decide to conceal his death by staging a robbery. However, the police investigation leads to suspicions surrounding Cynthia and Joyce, putting their friendship and moral principles to the test. The film explores themes of friendship, betrayal, and the consequences of violence, offering a deep psychological portrait of the main characters.
