This 1998 American thriller and drama directed by Sam Raimi follows a devastating spiral of events triggered by the discovery of a hidden fortune. The story centers on Hank Mitchell (Bill Paxton), a modest and principled accountant, his mentally challenged brother Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton), and their friend Lou (Brent Briscoe). During a walk through the snowy woods, the trio stumbles upon a crashed airplane containing a dead pilot and a bag filled with over four million dollars in cash. They agree to hide the money and wait to ensure it is not being sought by authorities. However, their seemingly simple plan unravels into paranoia, deceit, and escalating violence. As tensions mount, Hank struggles to maintain order and protect his wife Sarah (Bridget Fonda), but the situation deteriorates rapidly. The film explores moral ambiguity, greed, and the corrosive power of secrets, showing how even good intentions can lead to ruin. A Simple Plan was critically acclaimed, particularly for Scott B. Smith’s screenplay and the powerful performances, and received multiple Academy Award nominations.
