This Love of Ours

The 1945 American romantic drama directed by William Dieterle, based on Luigi Pirandello's play "Come prima, meglio di prima," follows Dr. Michel Touzac (Charles Korvin), who, twelve years after separating from his wife Karin (Merle Oberon) due to false accusations of infidelity, unexpectedly encounters her in Chicago. Karin, now working under the name Florence Hale as an assistant to nightclub caricaturist Joseph Targel (Claude Rains), is overwhelmed by the meeting and attempts suicide. Michel saves her using his new surgical technique. Reflecting on their past, he realizes the separation was a mistake. Their daughter, Susette (Sue England), who believed her mother was dead, faces emotional challenges as the family attempts to reunite. The film delves into themes of love, forgiveness, and the restoration of familial bonds, emphasizing the power of truth and reconciliation. Hans J. Salter's musical score was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1946.
