Tom and Jerry: The Movie

An animated musical comedy film produced in the United States in 1992, directed by Phil Roman, based on the characters Tom and Jerry created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. The plot follows a cat named Tom and a mouse named Jerry who, after losing their home due to its demolition, find themselves homeless and decide to team up for survival. During their adventures, they encounter a stray dog named Puggsy and his flea companion Frankie, who teach them the importance of friendship. Soon, Tom and Jerry meet an eight-year-old girl named Robyn Starling (Anndi McAfee), who has run away from her cruel aunt Pristine Figg (Charlotte Rae) after receiving news of her father's presumed death in Tibet. Robyn dreams of finding her father, and Tom and Jerry decide to assist her in this quest. However, Aunt Figg, upon learning of her niece's escape, announces a reward for her return, attracting the attention of various unscrupulous individuals, including the greedy lawyer Lickboot (Tony Jay) and the cruel animal collector Dr. Applecheek (Henry Gibson). As events unfold, the heroes face numerous obstacles: Tom and Jerry are captured and taken to an animal shelter, where they meet other captives and orchestrate an escape; Robyn falls into the hands of Captain Kiddie (Rip Taylor), an amusement park owner who plans to claim the reward for her return. The climax occurs when all characters converge at a lakeside cabin, where a fire breaks out. At the last moment, Robyn's father, Mr. Starling (Ed Gilbert), arrives by helicopter and rescues his daughter, while Tom and Jerry barely escape the burning building. In the finale, Robyn reunites with her father, and Tom and Jerry continue living in their home, resuming their eternal antics. The film is notable for being the first in the franchise's history where the main characters, Tom and Jerry, have extensive dialogue, whereas in the original shorts, they were largely silent. The musical score for the film was composed by Henry Mancini, who also wrote original songs in collaboration with Leslie Bricusse. Despite the involvement of renowned voice actors and the composer, the film received predominantly negative reviews from critics, who criticized it for deviating from the traditional short film format and for making the main characters overly talkative. Commercially, the film also fell short of expectations, grossing approximately $3.6 million worldwide against a budget of $3.5 million.​
