Unsane

The 2018 American psychological thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer follows Sawyer Valentini (Claire Foy), a young woman who relocates from Boston to Pennsylvania to escape her obsessive stalker, David Strine (Joshua Leonard). Suffering from anxiety and paranoia, Sawyer seeks counseling at a psychiatric facility, where she inadvertently signs herself into a 24-hour voluntary commitment. Her stay is unexpectedly extended, and she begins to suspect that one of the staff members is her stalker under a new identity. As the institution's bureaucracy dismisses her claims, Sawyer feels increasingly isolated and desperate. Within the facility, she befriends Nate Hoffman (Jay Pharoah), an undercover journalist investigating the hospital's fraudulent practices, and clashes with fellow patient Violet (Juno Temple). Meanwhile, Sawyer's mother, Angela (Amy Irving), attempts to secure her daughter's release but faces numerous obstacles. The situation escalates when David murders both Nate and Angela, leading to a final confrontation in isolation where Sawyer outwits and kills David, ultimately escaping. Six months later, despite appearing to have resumed a normal life, Sawyer continues to experience fear and anxiety, highlighting the enduring impact of her trauma. The film was shot entirely on an iPhone 7 Plus, lending it a raw, claustrophobic aesthetic that intensifies the psychological tension.
