A 2014 American psychological thriller directed by Brad Anderson, loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether". Set in 1899, the film follows a young doctor, Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess), who arrives at Stonehearst Asylum to begin his residency. There, he meets the superintendent, Dr. Silas Lamb (Ben Kingsley), whose unorthodox methods of treating patients arouse Newgate's suspicions. Edward also encounters a patient, Eliza Graves (Kate Beckinsale), suffering from hysteria, and soon discovers that something is amiss at the asylum. In the basement, he finds the real staff, including the true superintendent, Dr. Benjamin Salt (Michael Caine), locked up and realizes that Lamb and his associates are actually patients who have taken over the institution. Newgate decides to help the real staff reclaim control of the asylum while trying to protect Eliza and come to terms with his feelings for her. The film explores themes of madness, power, and human nature, illustrating how thin the line is between sanity and insanity.
