Velvet Goldmine

A 1998 British-American musical drama film directed by Todd Haynes, who co-wrote the screenplay with James Lyons. Set in early 1970s Britain during the glam rock era, the film tells the story of fictional bisexual pop star Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), who fakes his own death on stage, leading to the downfall of his career. A decade later, journalist Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale) is assigned to write an article about Slade and his disappearance. During his investigation, Arthur interviews key figures from Slade's past, including his former wife Mandy Slade (Toni Collette) and American rock musician Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor), with whom Slade had both professional and personal relationships. Through a series of flashbacks, the film depicts the rise and fall of Slade's career, his struggle with identity, and his impact on the music scene of the time. The film explores themes of sexual freedom, self-expression, and the consequences of fame. It received the Best Artistic Contribution award at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design (Sandy Powell). Despite critical acclaim, the film grossed approximately $4.3 million worldwide against a $9 million budget, making it a commercial failure. However, it has since gained a cult following among fans of glam rock and independent cinema.
