The 1982 American musical comedy-drama film, directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, is based on Clancy Carlile's 1980 novel of the same name. Set during the Great Depression, the story follows itinerant country singer Red Stovall (Clint Eastwood), who, suffering from tuberculosis, gets a chance to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Accompanied by his young nephew Whit (Kyle Eastwood), Red embarks on a journey filled with adventures, including Whit's first sexual encounter in a brothel. Upon reaching Nashville, Red's audition is marred by a coughing fit, but record company scouts, impressed by his talent, arrange a recording session, knowing he has only days to live. During the session, Red's condition worsens, and his parts are completed by guitarist Smokey (Marty Robbins in his final film role). Red passes away, and Whit vows to tell his uncle's story. The film explores themes of dreams, family, and overcoming life's hardships, emphasizing the importance of legacy and remembrance. Despite modest box office returns, the film received positive reviews from critics for its warm atmosphere and strong performances.
