A 1970 American musical comedy-drama film directed by Vincente Minnelli, based on the 1965 Broadway production of the same name. The screenplay, written by Alan Jay Lerner, is adapted from his own play, with music composed by Burton Lane. The film stars Barbra Streisand as Daisy Gamble, an eccentric woman with extrasensory perception who seeks help from psychiatrist Marc Chabot (Yves Montand) to quit smoking. Hypnosis opens up a past life. In the 19th century, Daisy lived as a seductive aristocrat named Lady Melinda Winifred Waine Tentrees, the illegitimate daughter of a kitchen maid. Melinda used paternity records from an orphanage to blackmail wealthy fathers and eventually married nobleman Robert Tentrees, but was later accused of espionage and treason after he abandoned her. As the sessions progress, Chabot falls in love with Melinda, while Daisy develops feelings for him. However, upon discovering that Chabot's interest lies solely in her past life, Daisy becomes disillusioned and leaves. In the film's conclusion, Daisy mentions fourteen additional lives, including a future incarnation as Laura, who will marry Chabot in 2038. The film was shot in New York City and the United Kingdom, including the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. Despite its star-studded cast and high-budget production, the film received mixed reviews from critics but has since gained a cult following.
