A 1961 American science fiction disaster film produced and directed by Irwin Allen, co-written with Charles Bennett. The story follows the advanced nuclear submarine Seaview, designed by Admiral Harriman Nelson (Walter Pidgeon), which, during Arctic trials, discovers the sky ablaze due to the ignition of the Van Allen radiation belt caused by a meteor shower. Nelson proposes a bold solution: launching a nuclear missile into the Mariana Trench to disperse the belt and save Earth from overheating. His plan faces opposition from the United Nations and crew members, including Captain Lee Crane (Robert Sterling) and scientist Dr. Susan Hiller (Joan Fontaine). Other characters include Lieutenant Cathy Connors (Barbara Eden), Commodore Lucius Emery (Peter Lorre), and Lieutenant Danny Romano (Frankie Avalon), who also performs the film's title song. The film blends science fiction and drama, exploring themes of global threat, scientific responsibility, and moral dilemmas. It features detailed sets and models of the submarine, later reused in the 1964 television series of the same name. The film was commercially successful, grossing $7 million against a $1.58 million budget, and became one of the early entries in the science fiction disaster genre.
