The 2005 American biographical drama directed by James Mangold is based on Johnny Cash's autobiographies "Man in Black" and "Cash: The Autobiography." The film chronicles the life of legendary country musician Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix), starting from his childhood on a cotton farm in Arkansas, where he endures the loss of his brother and a strained relationship with his father, Ray Cash (Robert Patrick). After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he marries Vivian Liberto (Ginnifer Goodwin) and moves to Memphis, where he begins his music career by signing with Sun Records. While touring, he meets singer June Carter (Reese Witherspoon), and they develop a romantic relationship despite his marriage and growing drug addiction. The film delves into Cash's struggles with addiction, his downfall, and subsequent rehabilitation with June's support. The story culminates in his famous concert at Folsom Prison, after which he proposes to June on stage. The film also features Dallas Roberts as Sam Phillips, Dan John Miller as Luther Perkins, Larry Bagby as Marshall Grant, and Shelby Lynne as Carrie Cash. The music was produced by T-Bone Burnett, with the actors performing their characters' vocals. The film received critical acclaim and numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Best Actress for Reese Witherspoon, and nominations for Best Actor, Editing, Sound, and Costume Design.
