White Noise​

The 2022 American absurdist comedy-drama directed by Noah Baumbach, adapted from Don DeLillo's 1985 novel, offers a multilayered exploration of death anxiety, family dynamics, and the cacophony of information in postmodern society. Set in 1984 at a fictional college in Ohio, the story follows Professor Jack Gladney (Adam Driver), founder of the "Hitler studies" department, who lives with his fourth wife, Babette (Greta Gerwig), and their blended family. Despite his academic prominence, Jack secretly takes German lessons to prepare for an upcoming conference. Their routine is disrupted by an industrial accident—the "Airborne Toxic Event"—resulting from a train derailment that forces the family to evacuate amid chaos. During the evacuation, Jack is exposed to the toxic cloud, intensifying his existential dread. Upon returning home, he notices Babette becoming detached and lethargic. Their daughter Denise discovers that Babette is secretly taking an experimental drug called Dylar, designed to suppress the fear of death. It is revealed that Babette participated in a dubious clinical trial and engaged in a sexual relationship with the enigmatic "Mr. Gray" to continue receiving the drug. Driven by jealousy and fear, Jack seeks revenge and confronts Mr. Gray, leading to a violent encounter. Both are wounded, but at a hospital run by German atheist nuns, Jack and Babette reconcile. The film concludes with a choreographed scene in a supermarket, symbolizing a return to normalcy.
