The 1953 American film, an adaptation of William Shakespeare's play, depicts the political intrigues and tragic events surrounding the assassination of Roman dictator Julius Caesar (Louis Calhern). After defeating Pompey, Caesar returns to Rome, where his growing popularity raises concerns among senators, particularly Cassius (John Gielgud) and Brutus (James Mason). Cassius persuades Brutus to join a conspiracy aimed at preventing Caesar from becoming a tyrant. Despite warnings from his wife Portia (Deborah Kerr) and omens of impending danger, Brutus decides to participate in the plot. On the day of the Senate meeting, ignoring the fears of his wife Calpurnia (Greer Garson), Caesar proceeds to the Senate, where he is assassinated by the conspirators. Following the murder, Mark Antony (Marlon Brando), a loyal supporter of Caesar, is granted permission to speak at the funeral. In his famous oration, he uses sarcasm and rhetorical devices to turn the public against the conspirators, inciting a civil war. In the ensuing battles, the forces of Antony and Octavius defeat those of Brutus and Cassius. Realizing the inevitability of their defeat, Cassius and Brutus commit suicide. The film received critical acclaim for Joseph L. Mankiewicz's direction and the performances, particularly Marlon Brando's portrayal of Mark Antony. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Brando, winning Best Art Direction – Black-and-White. Both Brando and Gielgud also received BAFTA Awards for their performances.
