The 1954 American historical biographical film directed by Henry Koster is based on the eponymous bestseller by Annemarie Selinko. The film narrates the life of Désirée Clary (Jean Simmons), the daughter of a wealthy silk merchant from Marseille, who in 1794 meets young Captain Napoleon Bonaparte (Marlon Brando). They develop a romantic relationship, and Napoleon proposes to her. However, he soon leaves Marseille, promising to return for the wedding but instead marries Joséphine de Beauharnais (Merle Oberon). Heartbroken, Désirée moves to Paris, where she meets General Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (Michael Rennie). Despite initial reservations, she marries him. Bernadotte becomes a Marshal of France and later, at the invitation of Swedish King Charles XIII, the heir to the Swedish throne. Désirée, reluctant to leave France, remains in Paris but later joins her husband in Sweden, where she becomes Queen Désirée. The film spans the period from the French Revolution to Napoleon's downfall, depicting key historical events through the personal experiences of the main character. The film received two Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. The performances of Marlon Brando as Napoleon and Jean Simmons as Désirée were highly praised by critics.
