Youth

A 2015 drama film directed by Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino. The story centers on two old friends: retired composer and conductor Fred Ballinger (Michael Caine) and film director Mick Boyle (Harvey Keitel). They are vacationing at a luxurious Swiss hotel in the Alps, reflecting on their lives, careers, and the inevitability of aging. Fred, who has retired from his musical career, receives an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II to perform at Prince Philip's birthday, but he declines, citing personal reasons. Mick is working on his "testament film" with a group of young screenwriters, hoping that his muse and former actress Brenda Morel (Jane Fonda) will agree to play the lead role. Fred's daughter, Lena (Rachel Weisz), is going through a divorce from Mick's son, adding tension to their relationships. Also at the hotel is young actor Jimmy Tree (Paul Dano), preparing for a new role and observing the behavior of those around him. The film explores themes of youth and old age, memory and loss, art and creativity, showing how the characters strive to find meaning and beauty in their lives despite approaching old age.
