A 2016 American comedy-drama directed in the USA, Germany, France, the Cayman Islands, and Mexico by Tom Tykwer. Based on the novel of the same name by Dave Eggers, the film follows 54-year-old American businessman Alan Clay (Tom Hanks), who, after professional and personal setbacks, travels to Saudi Arabia to sell a high-tech holographic teleconferencing system to the king. Alan hopes that this deal will help him pay for his daughter's college tuition and revive his career. Upon arriving in the desert city where the futuristic "King's Metropolis of Economy and Trade" is under construction, he encounters bureaucracy, cultural differences, and a lack of interest from the client. While waiting for a meeting with the king, Alan befriends driver Yousef (Omar Elba) and doctor Zahra Hakem (Sarita Choudhury), leading to unexpected personal revelations and a reevaluation of his life priorities. The film explores themes of globalization, cultural clash, and the search for meaning in the modern economy.
