Is an elegant stage practice that combines choreography, music, theatricality, and technically demanding body movements, which originated during the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century and was further developed at the French royal court under Louis XIV, becoming the foundation of academic dance. Ballet is based on a strict system of movements, positions, and terminology—mainly of French origin—and demands from performers a high level of physical conditioning, flexibility, strength, endurance, and artistry. Classical ballet is divided into several schools and styles: French, Italian, Russian, English, and American, each contributing distinct technical and interpretive elements. Major historical figures in ballet include Marius Petipa, Agrippina Vaganova, George Balanchine, as well as performers such as Anna Pavlova, Rudolf Nureyev, and Maya Plisetskaya. Narrative ballets like Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty are regarded as pinnacles of the genre. In the 20th century, numerous modernist forms of ballet emerged, including neoclassical and contemporary ballet, which blend traditional technique with experimentation in form, music, and presentation. Ballet is taught in specialized schools and academies worldwide and requires years of training, including daily classes, movement refinement, and participation in productions. This practice is considered not only physical but also a spiritual discipline, developing focus, self-discipline, and stage awareness. Modern ballet companies and theaters continue to innovate by integrating ballet traditions with digital technologies and multimedia elements.
