Cosplay

Is a creative practice of designing and wearing costumes that accurately recreate the appearance of characters from films, anime, manga, video games, comics, and other forms of pop culture. The practice was named by Japanese journalist Nobuyuki Takahashi after visiting a science fiction convention in Los Angeles in 1984, where he coined the term "cosplay" from "costume play". However, the act of dressing as fictional characters dates back to the 1960s at American fan conventions, and even earlier in theatrical, masquerade, and ritualistic traditions. In Japan, cosplay quickly became a central part of otaku subculture, gaining traction through events like Comic Market (Comiket), and later spread worldwide as a global hobby. The practice involves not only crafting costumes, often from scratch, but also embodying the character through mimicking gestures, expressions, and speech. Cosplayers often sew their own outfits, build props, apply makeup, wear wigs and contact lenses, and even use technologies like 3D printing. Cosplay is performed at contests, conventions, photoshoots, and on online platforms and social media. This form of self-expression combines design, performance art, fandom, and hands-on creativity. It includes solo and group performances, cosplay shows, catwalks, and genre variants like genderbend, crossplay, and original character cosplay. Over time, cosplay has evolved from a hobby into a professional field for some, including fashion designers, influencers, performers, and craftspeople. Major international events like the World Cosplay Summit bring together participants from around the world to showcase their work. Cosplay fosters creativity, builds communities, allows exploration of identity and emotional expression, and sustains a vibrant fandom-centered culture.
