Drawing

This is the visual practice of creating images through lines and strokes on various surfaces such as paper, parchment, fabric, wood, or stone, using tools like charcoal, graphite, pen, chalk, or ink. Drawing is one of humanity's oldest forms of artistic expression: the earliest known examples—cave paintings in Lascaux, France, and Altamira, Spain, dating back approximately 18,000 years—depict hunting scenes and animals rendered with remarkable accuracy and a keen sense of form. In antiquity, drawing was employed to decorate pottery, architectural elements, and as preparatory work for mosaics and frescoes. During the Middle Ages, it served as an auxiliary tool in the creation of stained glass, illuminated manuscripts, and sculptures. From the 14th century onward, drawing began to be recognized in Europe as an independent artistic practice, particularly during the Renaissance, when masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael used it to study anatomy, perspective, and composition. In the 17th and 18th centuries, art academies, such as the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno founded in Florence in 1563, incorporated drawing as a fundamental component of artistic education. In the 19th century, drawing became an essential part of training for artists, architects, and engineers, as well as a means of scientific visualization, exemplified by Galileo Galilei's astronomical sketches. The 20th century saw drawing evolve into new forms, from expressionist sketches to conceptual graphic works. Today, it is utilized in traditional art, digital media, design, animation, and illustration, remaining a versatile tool for observation, thought, and self-expression.
