Is an artistic and craft-based practice of creating images or inscriptions by cutting, etching, or scratching into a hard surface such as metal, wood, glass, bone, or stone. It originated in prehistoric times — some of the earliest examples include ornamental and symbolic carvings on bone and stone from the Paleolithic period. In its classical form, engraving developed in Europe during the 14th–15th centuries with the rise of metal carving techniques, particularly on copper and steel, and was widely used to produce illustrations, prints, jewelry, and weapons. During the Renaissance, it became foundational to book illustration and reached a high level of artistry with masters like Albrecht Dürer, whose engravings and etchings influenced European art deeply. There are various types of engraving: burin (intaglio), acid etching (etching), drypoint, laser, and mechanical engraving. It is applied both in decorative arts and in the creation of high art. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the practice evolved with the advent of digital tools and laser systems, achieving unprecedented precision and broadening its use in fields ranging from jewelry and fine arts to architectural panels and industrial applications. Engraving combines craftsmanship, precision, and visual expressiveness, and remains relevant both in traditional art and in contemporary design and manufacturing.
