Scrapbooking

Is a decorative and applied creative practice focused on designing and assembling personalized albums, journals, notebooks, or pages using photographs, clippings, stickers, paper, fabric, lettering, and other embellishments. The purpose of scrapbooking is to preserve personal or family memories, highlight important moments, visualize emotions, and reflect the creator’s unique style and creativity. The origins of this practice trace back to early 19th-century Europe, when "commonplace books" and "friendship albums" gained popularity, serving as collections of quotes, poems, sketches, and keepsakes. In 1830, the first guidebook dedicated to scrapbooking, titled "The Scrapbook," was published by John Poole, marking the beginning of scrapbooking as a more formal and artistic endeavor. During the Victorian era, it became a fashionable pastime for women, particularly in the UK and USA. After the invention of photography, scrapbooking evolved into a more visually centered hobby. The practice experienced a revival in the 1980s in the United States, driven by Anne Barrows of Utah, who launched the first specialty company and published a book on preserving family memories. This sparked rapid industry growth, leading to dedicated shops, magazines, communities, contests, and blogs. Modern scrapbooking encompasses various styles: vintage, shabby chic, American, European, clean and graphic, and mixed media. Techniques include embossing, die-cutting, collage, stamping, watercolor, and calligraphy. Today, scrapbooking exists in both traditional and digital formats, and has spread worldwide. It offers a way to preserve memories, express individuality, relieve stress, blend visual art with storytelling, and connect people through creative communities.
